Our History

Advent Lutheran church was originally chartered as a congregation of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA), and was officially organized on October 17, 1982. Worship services were initially conducted by the mission developer, Pastor Bob Lundgren, in Morse Elementary school until the first phase of the building was completed in 1986. At that time, Pastor Bob Hulse was serving the congregation.

At the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in 1988, Advent began a new ministry with former LCA Bishop Roger Gieschen serving an intentional term call until his retirement. In August of 1990, a clergy couple was called to serve this thriving community. Pastor Roger Gustafson and Pastor Susan Langhauser began their ministry as co-pastors at Advent.

Significant events in the life of the congregation include two building expansions: Educational and fellowship space in 1993, and a new sanctuary with expanded office and educational space in 2000. We are the "mother church" for a growing Laotian Worshipping Community and offer early childhood education through our Preschool for ages 3, 4 and 5.

Our worship and educational offerings have grown dramatically in the past two decades with an ever-extending reach in service and mission to the community, the country and the world. Advent also has an outstanding music ministry as well as faith development programs for all ages. We are especially proud of our Youth Ministry, which we believe is "Youth doing ministry."

Advent lives up to its name by being a "place of preparation" for spiritual nurturing and growth for individuals, families, small groups and the congregation's life as a whole. Advent continues to be a "God Oasis" located at the corner of 151st St. and Quivira, in Olathe, Kansas, for all who seek the encouragement, comfort and life-giving nourishment of a relationship with Jesus Christ.
